When I tell people that I am a paranormal investigator I get a mixture of reactions. Everything from people thinking I’m some kind of brave hero to those who take the mickey out of me for chasing my own imagination but I tell them all the same…try it for yourself!
There are many great companies who offer fantastic events and I promise you will have a memorable night. Go with an open mind and you will have fun whether anything paranormal happens or not, you will also have all the Jaffa Cakes you can eat, it’s like they’re our official sponsor or something.
Common concerns are:
- Will I be seperated from my friends – No, you will not be made to feel uncomfortable by the event company, they want you to enjoy yourself and come back after all!
- Could I be followed home by a spirit – Highly unlikely, they are in this place for a reason and attaching themselves to a complete stranger to follow them home would be very random behaviour. Some companies also work with mediums who could offer extra reassurance with this too.
- Will I be left on my own at any point – Not unless you have asked to be, as mentioned previously it is in the events companies best interests to keep you happy.
- Will I get to use any equipment – that depends entirely on the company you are with and a quick bit of research will get you that answer. Some rely on more traditional techniques whilst others come packing with a full suitcase and a medium, thats how I role π
- What do I do if I see or hear something – Scream probably but try not to run as that can cause a health and safety issue
If I have missed anything here please drop a comment below and I will happily answer, I know it can be a bit nerve wracking when its your first time!
The format of the events is often quite similar between companies. You will nearly always try more traditional methods of communicating over the modern scientific ones. The aim is usually to help you have a personal experience so using equipment can be counter productive as you will nearly always be able to explain it away. Instead try using equipment in twos, its more difficult to explain if you have multiple devices saying the same thing.
Traditional Methods – These rely on your senses to pick up spirit. This starts with calling out and asking questions which could result in numerous paranormal responses including hearing a voice, feeling a touch or seeing an object move or be otherwise manipulated (cat ball lighting up etc). You can then move on to other experiments such as human pendulum, dowsing rods, crystals and table tipping. Most groups don’t use Ouija boards because of the fear around them though, personally, I don’t see the difference in a spirit moving the planchette and moving a chair. Ouija boards are a game created by the Fuld Family in the late 1800’s, though the design is based on an ancient Chinese method it is still very different.
Scientific Methods – Whilst some gadgets are made specifically for ‘ghost hunting’ most are commandeered from other sectors. The ever trusty K2 is a stud finder, it detects electromagnetic field, which all objects give off, including spirits. The SLS camera is the Xbox Kinect and will map the spirits as stick figures as well as people, I have seen some amazing things with these. Voice recorders were made for journalism but are excellent for detecting EVP’s (spirit voices) especially the older models for some reason.
No matter what you try you will be looking for accurate responses ie can you tap twice? *taps twice*, specific replies to questions you have asked and specific movements you have asked to see. Everything is open to interpretation and everyones opinion should be listened too because we have no way of finding out who is right!
Thats one of the biggest attractions when it comes to the paranormal, it is still unknown. Some people like space, some people like the oceans but the coolest people like the paranormal!
